Greyston Bakery

I usually say no to sweets, especially when the chocolate industry is culprit to some of the worst forms of child and forced labor. Children as young as 6 years old are being trafficked for forced labor in the cocoa industry but it proves difficult for consumers to trace their chocolate to the cocoa beans, as they are often extracted from other countries. However, there is something you can do here in the United States to empower the formerly incarcerated, homeless and/or those suffering from drug addiction, while satisfying your sweet tooth.

It’s simple – eat cake from Greyston.

Founded 30 years ago, this social enterprise based in New York permeates social consciousness by employing some of the most difficult-to-employ individuals in the state.

Here are the reasons to treat yourself and indulge in a brownie or dessert from Greyston Bakery:

  1. Has an open-door policy offering employment opportunities regardless of education, work history or past social barriers, such as incarceration, homelessness or drug use.
  2. Built low-income apartments for formerly homeless individuals, providing housing for Bakery workers and their peers.
  3. Created the Community Gardens and Environmental Education program as a result of increased awareness of health disparities for communities of color as well as growing concerns about the environment.
  4. Opened a new $32 million multifamily housing development in Yonkers with 92 modern, energy efficient apartments for local working families.
  5. It is sustainable; last year it achieved 13 million in sales.

If you love Ben & Jerry’s then you already support Greyston because the company makes the brownies in Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream. Just one more reason to eat more fudge brownie ice cream!
